Ataxic Cerebral Palsy

Ataxic cerebral palsy is a type of cerebral palsy in which patient have poor coordination of movements and low muscle tone. This type of cerebral palsy is rare, only 5 to 10 percent of total CP patient are affected from ataxic cerebral palsy. This cerebral palsy is very dangerous because it affects to your child but it also affect to you also. The patients of ataxic cerebral palsy may not be able to balance their body and have problems in walking. Child with ataxic cerebral palsy looks shaky and unsteady. This CP has disorder of balance and depth penetration. Very old persons are not being able to hold small objects in ataxic cerebral palsy.

Fact about ataxic cerebral palsy -
Ataxic cerebral palsy cause due to damage of cerebellum in brain, due to this damage the patient may not be able to balance and coordinate body movements.

Ataxic cerebral palsy results –
Poor muscle tone or hypotonia disorder
Depth perception disorders
Problems in controlling body motions
Various tremors
Problems in balancing body

Signs of ataxic cerebral palsy in children –
Disabilities like hearing disorder, visual disorder, mental retardation etc.
Child have ataxic cerebral palsy may has coarser movements.
Demonstrating unsteady gait
Improper writing job
Problems in movement of eyeballs
Problems in voluntary movements

Through MRI, CT scan and meticulous physical examination physician easily find the ataxic cerebral palsy in children. These tests also help the physician to find if the brain of child is developing normally or not. The treatment of ataxic cerebral palsy is formulated. But it is treated with medical substances and therapies. Chronic cerebella is the popular treatment of ataxic cerebral palsy. In this treatment an electrode is placed to the surface of damaged brain for the restore of body balance and muscle tone.

Cerebral palsy is a disorder of brain and ataxic cerebral palsy is a very serious disorder, so it is important for parents to know the sigh of ataxic cerebral palsy, it will helps them to identify their child if he/she is suffering from ataxic cerebral palsy or not.

Cerebral palsy children

Cerebral palsy is a serious disorder of brain by birth. Cerebral palsy children have adjustment problems because they are not being able to adjust or survive in the normal human being lifestyle. The CP child may not be able to interact with his family members, teachers or any other person. That’s why many cerebral palsy children are fall into depression so parent have to take more care towards such children otherwise the child become his own victor first.

In cerebral palsy the child brain is damaged, they lose the muscular control and or coordination over their limbs or other parts of body. There motor skills are damaged. This is the reason that cerebral palsy children are not able to handle or move things. These children are also not being able to stand in erect position, sit properly, walk, laugh, smile or talk properly. The cerebral palsy children some times lose control over face muscle, which leads in disability of talk or smile properly. The secondary symptoms for cerebral palsy children are seizures and mental retardation which makes the care taker to adjust with the CP individual. Cerebral palsy patient may feel frustrations when they are not be able to do any physical work for example inability to do some simple work. Generally the parents of cerebral palsy children says them helpless, hopeless make the patient in a state of depression or frustration. Generally such depression state is not detected by parents or other family members.

Cerebral palsy children have the feelings of acceptance, desire to do some thing or recognition, these feelings link such children to normal children. But normal children or other persons may not be able to understand such feelings. According to time change the needs of cerebral children als changes, they ask questions to family or other persons which are definitely be answered for the treatment of CP children.

The positive role of parents and other persons is must towards cerebral palsy children. Normally cerebral palsy teenagers require more care, because these individuals have more need to learn things or habits. These patients also needs for occupational skills so that they live independent life. Parents have to focus more on cerebral palsy children than to other children because they needs special treatment, they have to take proper care otherwise cerebral palsy children develop emotional or and behavioral disturbance.

Mild cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy is a serious disorder of motor of brain, in this disorder the there is a brain damage due to some reasons. But there is also a situation in which the brain of patient is minimally damage, this type of cerebral palsy is known as mild cerebral palsy or minimally cerebral palsy. The individuals of mild cerebral palsy normally be able to live normal life.

Mild cerebral palsy is also a serious disorder; it also leads to some other disorders. Mild cerebral palsy patient require more care than other CP patient because the mild cerebral palsy leads some other disorder which also affect mind cerebral palsy patient to be mild or severe. So special or more treatment is required for the individuals of mild cerebral palsy. The reason for mild cerebral palsy is different for different patients, so definitely the procedure of treatment is also differing. Generally the child of mild cerebral palsy has better chance to be cured with physical therapies and serious treatment.

The mild cerebral palsy patient may live more normal life than other cerebral palsy patients, they able to talk and reply for questions asked. The communication of mild CP patient is not too perfect as normal persons have. The time taken in the treatment of mild CP is long because the patient’s neuromuscular system is damaged and requires critical and special treatment. The mild cerebral palsy child be able to learn things because, still after brain damage there are some reflexes which are safe and active.

Sometimes the patient children of mild cerebral palsy are come over from this disorder naturally as they grow but it is unpredictable. That’s why the family members of mild cerebral palsy child may have to more attentive and caring so that the disorder cured naturally. Parents have to give healthy food for better improvement s in such children. They also go for physical therapies and programs which helps mild cerebral palsy child to enhance muscular ability. Parents also tell such patient that they are totally healthy as the other children are.

Cerebral Palsy Treatment

Right now there is no proper treatment of cerebral palsy but there are some therapies through cerebral palsy patients may feel some relief. The most impotent thing about these therapies is- a particular therapy is not for every patient. Generally cerebral palsy cases are unique so there is requirement of different cerebral palsy treatment therapy for a particular case. Their therapies for CP are range from physical exercise to botox injections. Normally health care professionals and physicians work together, to find out the causes of cerebral palsy and its treatment.

For the proper treatment of cerebral palsy there is a requirement of proper team of health care professionals of various backgrounds. An expert cerebral palsy treatment health care team include-

Physician- For the treatment of cerebral palsy an expert physician required who develop mentally challenged patient. The physician will act as a team leader and synchronize the team members for getting maximum performance.

Orthopedist- The Orthopedist is an expert in issues related to bones and muscles, his expatriation is must for cerebral palsy treatment.

Psychologist- This professional helps the cerebral palsy patient and his/her family members in dealing with the unique stresses. There is a need to CP patients for the cure of self-destructive behaviors. The psychologists will helps the family members to adjust their behavior and attitudes towards cerebral palsy patient.

Physical therapist- This professional help patient in the cerebral palsy treatment through exercise.

Occupational therapist- This professional helps the patient for better functionality of everyday life at work or school or college.

Speech language therapist- This professional helps in the improvement of communication of cerebral palsy patient.

Social worker- Social worker helps the family of CP patient to gain access to community resources available for the cerebral palsy disabled.

Some of cerebral palsy treatments and their procedure is described below-

Cerebral palsy treatment through physical exercise and therapy
In this therapy the team for the treatment of cerebral palsy patient try to cure CP through the physical exercise and therapy. These exercises are differing from patient, generally a exercise who work for a particular may not work for other patient. So there is a requirement of physical therapist is must.

Cerebral palsy treatment through behavioral therapy
Behavioral therapy is used for the treatment of cerebral palsy in the terms of improvement of patient communication skill and mental skills. The behavioral therapy is differing from patient to patient according to their age groups and disabilities.

Cerebral palsy treatment through drug therapy
This therapy is used to control seizures associated with cerebral palsy. According the disorder of cerebral palsy the drug are prescribed. Drug therapy also helps in controlling spasticity. Generally only three drugs are prescribed for the cerebral palsy treatment, these drugs are baclofen, diazepam and dantrolene.
Cerebral palsy treatment through surgery
Cerebral palsy patients who are suffered from extreme contractures and if this is unresponsive then surgery is required. Contractures is the inability in which patient unable to balance, move and coordination. Cerebral palsy surgeons may fix contractures through surgical therapy. In this surgeon require the surgery of concerned muscle and or tendons.

Cerebral palsy treatment through botox injections
From last more than ten years botox injections are used for the cerebral palsy treatment. Normally botox is injected in the muscle of cerebral palsy patient for relax that muscle. Botox is used to reduce spasms and stiffness in muscle, this will allow cerebral palsy therapist to work with patients in stretching the muscles. It is important to note that botox injections is not the cure or treatment of cerebral palsy.

Symptoms of cerebral palsy

Normally almost all types of cerebral palsy are characterized by posture, abnormal muscle tone, motor development and coordination or reflexes. The major symptoms of cerebral palsy are - unsteady gait and dysarthria, spasticity. Apart from these symptoms if soft tissues are found with majority of decreased muscle mass is also the symptom of cerebral palsy. These are the only the overview of symptoms for cerebral palsy but generally symptoms for cerebral palsy are based on the individuals who have it.

Secondary symptoms of cerebral palsy are – seizures, speech or communication disorders, vision or hearing impairment, learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities, and behavioral disorders.

Causes of cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy is a brain disorder in which affect approximately five thousand US children every year, it is an injury by birth. The major cause of cerebral palsy is birth mistakes like gynecologist negligence or error. In cerebral palsy the patient body will not be able to control movements and posture and may results in intellectual impairment, seizures, hearing deficits, behavioral problems, and vision disorders. Some of the causes of cerebral palsy are described below-

Acquired cerebral palsy – Around ten to twenty percent of total cases of cerebral palsy acquire the disorder after birth. In such cases the brain damage takes place in first few months or years after birth. The brain damage is due to viral encephalitis, bacterial meningitis or head injury.

Congenital cerebral palsy – This kind of cerebral palsy occurs at birth time and takes place due to specific events at the time of pregnancy delivery or during pregnancy. Due to these injuries the motor centers of brain are damage. The major problem with this cerebral palsy is that it is not be able to detect for months.

Generally the causes of cerebral palsy are inadequate care during pregnancy and/or delivery and carelessness after baby birth. The major cause of damage of motor centers of brain are; unrecognized fetal distress, excessive use of vacuum extraction, improper use of medications, untreated infections and the failure to perform a timely cesarean section.

Other causes of congenital cerebral palsy are-

Infections during pregnancy – Generally there is a virus infection in the worm of women, such as rubella or german measles virus infect the developing baby inside the pregnant belly of woman. Such viral infections damage the nervous system of infant. Infant brain injury may also lead to toxoplasmosis and cytomegalovirus. Cerebral palsy may also occur due to Infection of placenta.

Infant jaundice - If the jaundice is not treated properly in infants may be possibility for cerebral palsy. In jaundice bilirubin is circulating in blood system in excess amount which dissolve in subcutaneous fat. Due to this there is an appearance of yellowish skin and eyes of infant become whites. Generally the jaundice in the first week after birth is very dangerous, if taking any careless cerebral palsy occurs.

Some factors which increase the possibility of cerebral palsy

Breech presentation – Infants who show feet first instead of head first may be at the risk of cerebral palsy.

Complicated labor and delivery – brain damage in infants due to respiratory or vascular problems of the baby during labor and delivery has great risk of cerebral palsy.

Low apgar score - Apgar score is calculated at the first few minutes after birth of child. This is calculated after measuring breathing rate, baby heart rate, muscle tone, skin color and reflexes. If this score is low there is a possibility for cerebral palsy.

Low birth weight – Babies whose weight is less than 5lbs at birth time have the risk of cerebral palsy. Birth weight and cerebral palsy are proportional to each other, lower the baby birth weight higher the risk of cerebral palsy.

Prematurity – Infants who born before 37 weeks of pregnancy have more risk of cerebral palsy.

Multiple births – Twins or triplets baby birth may be possibly to lead cerebral palsy.

Nervous system malformations – some infants born with nervous system malformations for example some infants born with small head, such types of symptoms may lead cerebral palsy because in such cases the nervous system of infant is not developed properly.

Maternal bleeding – Maternal bleeding or vaginal bleeding during the last twelve of pregnancy may lead to cerebral palsy.

Severe proteinuria – if there is excess proteins in urine during pregnancy is also a symptom of cerebral palsy.

Spastic cerebral palsy

Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common type of cerebral palsy. The approximate percentage of spastic cerebral palsy patients among all CP patients is 70%. Spastic CP is basically related with muscles dysfunction.

The functionality of muscle is depending on pair of nerves or you can assume it as an electricity wire. The function of first nerve is to transfer signals from muscle to brain and the function of second nerve to carry signals from brain to muscle. Both the nerves follow each other and works simultaneously. For example if a muscle is tight in body then one set of nerve inform the brain about the tightness at the same time brain send a message to relax the muscle through second set of nerves. Such messages transfers go on all the time, for better functionality of muscle.

Now if the message transfers are smooth then there is no problem but whenever there is a condition of traffic jam due to flood of these messages; the concerned muscle have tenseness or you can say it is not be able for proper movement. This disorder is called spastic cerebral palsy. In spastic cerebral palsy the gray matter (where nerves are located) and cerebral cortex are damaged which cause the malfunctioning to muscle. Due to spastic cerebral palsy the muscle affected area become rigid and stiff too much which causes jerky movement.

There are five types of spastic cerebral palsy depending on the affected part of body.

Quadriplegia – In this type of spastic cerebral palsy torso and all the four limbs are affected.

Diplegia - In this type of spastic cerebral palsy any of the one pair of limbs is affected. Either both legs or both hands. Diplegia spastic cerebral palsy is the most common cerebral plasy.

Hemiplegia – In this type of spastic cerebral palsy only single side of body is affected.

Triplegia – In this type of spastic cerebral palsy in which three limbs are affected.

Monoplegia – In this type of spastic cerebral palsy only single limb is affected.

Monoplegia and triplegia cerebral palsy are very rare and found in very few patients.

The major property of spastic cerebral palsy is, it change with time. So is there is no treatment for spastic cerebral palsy it is possible that patient may suffered from permanent disabilities. Spastic cerebral palsy is the disorder of rigidity of muscles, which is treated if there is an early treatment.

Types of cerebral palsy

Generally there are three types of cerebral palsy which are described below-

Ataxia - In ataxia cerebral palsy the cerebellum of patient is damages which lead to problems body balance especially when patient is walking. The disease rate of ataxia cerebral palsy is ten percent of all cases of CP, and this type of cerebral palsy is very rare. Some patients who suffered from ataxia CP have hypotonic-like features. Normally these patients have auditory or visual processing of things or objects difficulties. These patients also feel difficulty is balancing their body or you can say they are instability in terms of gravity.

Athetoid or dyskinetic – athetoid cerebral palsy or dyskinetic cerebral palsy found in twenty percent cases of all cases of CP. In this type of cerebral palsy there is damage occurs in or pyramidal tract or and extrapyramidal motor system and in basal ganglia. Patients suffered from this type of cerebral palsy have problems in body movements

Spastic – The rate of spastic cerebral palsy is too high, seventy percent of total cases of CP are of spastic cerebral palsy. Patients who suffered from this type of cerebral palsy have damage in pyramidal track, motor cortex or corticospinal tract. Spastic cerebral palsy covers most of the patient of CP so the need to study and research this type of cerebral palsy is must. Spastic cerebral palsy is also classified in sub categories depending on the body part affected.

Cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy abbreviated as CP is a group of disease which leads to non progressive neurological physical disabilities in the development of human posture and movement. Cerebral palsy is developed due to the disturbance in the development of infant or fetal brain. The rate of cerebral palsy in developed countries is approximately 0.2 – 0.25% i.e. per 100 live births, 0.2 – 0.25 births are influenced by cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy occurs during pregnancy or at birth or after birth. Generally this disorder occurs during pregnancy. The occurrence rate of cerebral palsy during pregnancy is 75%, where as at the time of birth it is 5% and after birth it is 15%. Right now most of causes of cerebral palsy are unknown, only 20% of causes of this disease are known. The known causes of cerebral palsy are malnutrition, infections, and head injury in very early childhood. Cerebral palsy is non progressive disease i.e. this disease should not increase but along with this disorder some secondary orthopedic disorders are also formed. For example scoliosis of the spine and hip dislocation. Currently there is no treatment for cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy is of four types or you can say it is divided in four categories according to different movement impairments. The types of cerebral palsy are-

The ratio of spastic cerebral palsy is 30% of all cases of this disease, spastic found along with normally other three types of cerebral palsy. Apart from these four types there are also many other kinds of cerebral palsy.
